If you love sweet potatoes, then this is your new favorite go-to side dish recipe during the colder time of the year!

What are mashed sweet potatoes, anyways?

Very simple, a smooth mash made with sweet potatoes. It is prepared in exactly the same way as those classic vegan mashed potatoes, but instead of regular potatoes, you need to use sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are healthier than regular potatoes yet quite sweet. That’s why you must season it with a good pinch of salt. Of course, this only applies if you serve it as savory mashed sweet potatoes along with salty dishes.

It is also possible to use sweet potato mash in desserts. But I won’t go into that any further.

Boiled sweet potatoes are a bit softer than regular potatoes, that’s why you need a little less plant-based milk and margarine when preparing mash with them. An excellent way to save some extra fat and calories.

What To Serve With Vegan Sweet Potato Mash

Actually, everything that goes along and you are used to serve with classic mashed potatoes. It is a super tasty and healthy side dish to many hearty meals.

This dairy-free sweet potato mash is especially popular during winter and goes well with:

How to make vegan mashed sweet potatoes?

It is very easy to make mashed sweet potatoes dairy-free. The only difference from a non-diary mesh is that you need to replace the butter and milk with a plant-based version. You can use any kind of plant-based milk.

Personally, I prefer to prepare the recipe with oat milk or soy milk. It also works fine using nut milk, but nut milk often has a unique taste and can give the mash a somewhat nutty flavor. If you like that, perfect!

Coconut milk would work too, but you need to like the strong coconut flavor! Coconut milk contains quite an amount of fat. Therefore, if you are planning to use it to make this sweet potato mash, cut down on the butter.

You can use any kind of plant-based margarine to substitute the butter. It doesn’t matter which brand you use. If you don’t have any dairy-free margarine at hand, you can also replace it with olive oil. But make sure to use olive oil which isn’t too bitter.
