With this coffee breakfast smoothie, you are guaranteed a successful start into the day. Cause coffee smoothies are the ultimate combination of breakfast and coffee – all in one delicious creamy drink!

Plus, it’s super quick to make in only 5 minutes! No excuses in the morning! You can enjoy it at home (in the home office as I do) or on the go!

What do you need to make this healthy breakfast smoothie? One shot freshly brewed espresso or lungo coffee, frozen banana, peanut butter, oat milk, vanilla extract, and a little maple syrup to sweeten it. Last but not least, cacao powder for a beautiful chocolaty flavor and a rich brownish color.

The espresso provides the needed caffeine kick, which is (mostly) essential in the mornings! And the banana fills you up and doesn’t leave you with a hungry belly during those first morning hours.

But please don’t limit this delicious coffee smoothie to the mornings, it tastes wonderfully refreshing if served with some ice on a sunny afternoon.

Best Coffee For Smoothies

The smoothie tastes best with a freshly brewed shot espresso or lungo. The rich character and taste of both of those brewed coffees ads flavor!

I always brew mine with the PICCOLO XS coffee machine from NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto! It makes quality coffee in seconds. You can read more about this tiny & pretty machine in my previous blog post: Cafe de Olla!

Both, the Espresso and Lungo from NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto are made of 100% Arabica Premium beans.

For the Espresso variety, the beans are grown in Colombia and Brazil. It is an espresso full of character with fruity pomegranate notes and subtle accents of roasted walnuts.

For the Lungo variety, the beans come from Ethiopia, Brazil, and Colombia. It is a smooth coffee with aromatic roasted notes and hints of black currant.

Espresso vs. Lungo

What’s the difference? Both belong in the category of espressos. The lungo, which means “long”, is prepared with more water than the classic espresso. However, the same amount of ground coffee is used for both.

The classic espresso is brewed with 50ml of water, and the lungo with 120ml of water (→ the water quantities refer specifically to the capsules of NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto).

The lungo is, therefore, larger and somewhat milder in its taste, yet also more bitter than the classic espresso due to the longer contact with the water.

Recipe FAQ

  • Coffee: You can either use 1 shot of espresso or 1 brewed lungo. Pick the one you like more! 😉I prefer espresso, as it makes for a thicker smoothie.
  • Banana: I prefer to use a frozen one, which makes this smoothie wonderfully cold. Add additional ice cubes if you use a fresh banana. → Keep in mind that this will dilute the smoothie and make it more of a shake than a smoothie (still delicious 😉).
  • Protein Powder: Add some for a power morning smoothie & extra portion protein! Choose between coffee, chocolate, or vanilla protein powder.
  • Do you like it creamy & thick? Add plant-based yogurt.
  • Vanilla: Use dairy-free milk with vanilla flavor instead of vanilla extract.
  • Toppings? Add some flaxseeds, chia seeds, or nuts.
  • Allergic to peanuts? Omit the nut butter or substitute with almond butter.

  1. What if you don’t have those coffee machines to brew the coffee can you still make this?

    1. Hi Holly, of course. Use one shot of espresso or one lungo coffee of your choice. Alternatively, it would work too with instant coffee.
